In 1991 Peter Wharehinga and Wayne Flockton, both experienced tradesmen, joined forces to found P&W Engineering. Initially they worked from a small workshop facility in Mosgiel, Otago, employing three people. The general idea was to service the needs of the local area, mostly farm orientated machinery and some general maintenance in the local industry to overcome the downgrading of maintenance staff.

Our workshop facility now consists of a large indoor fabrication shop, machine shop, design office plus a front office. We currently employ some 50 staff and handle up to 70 different jobs at a time. All our staff members are knowledgeable about all areas of fabrication and we always direct our clients to the person that is in control of the specific production area. We pride ourselves on our open door policy where both parties speak their minds. From our experience, clients are very happy with the service, the quality and the pricing, so, they don't need to go anywhere else.

In 2007 Peter Wharehinga was entrusted with full control of P&W Engineering. We have had to relocate twice due to the expansion of the business and currently employ 25 Qualified Tradesman, 3 qualified engineers in civil, mechanical, and structural engineering, and office staff. We also employ a number of apprentices in our workshop. We put this rapid expansion down to quality of workmanship and prompt efficient service.

From idea to completed project:

  • Design team meets with client to specify the project
  • Design team meets with fab and machine shop team and senior tradesmen from the departments
  • Discussion and brainstorming of concept design
  • Designer takes away consensus from meeting and puts together sketches and drawings
  • Another staff meeting to finalise concept
  • Now designer issues drawings for the process to foreman
  • Foreman evaluates project
  • Project production commences

 

All of our products go through various design stages to determine the lowest possible production cost. We always strive to improve things for the client, not only in a cost feature but also in the use of the item we fabricate, to make the item user friendly and to simplify manufacture.
